Women in power: we demand parity!
“Women belong in all places where decisions are being made.”
Ruth Bader Ginsburg
While women represent half of humanity their under-representation in political offices is appalling. Out of 193 countries, only 22 have a female head of state or government. Women make up only 25% of members of national legislative bodies around the world, and only 4 countries have at least 50% of women in the national legislature. And when women stand up and fight to move the tide, they face violence: over 80% of women in politics have been victims of sexual violence or harassment. At this rate, gender equality in the highest positions of power will not be reached for another 130 years.
The lack of representation in political positions is not only a fundamental flaw of democracy, but also one of the root causes of gender-related discrimination, and a missed opportunity. Female leadership and participation correlate with more inclusive governance and better economic outcomes. From crossing party lines, being more responsive to public needs, increasing stability, challenging the status quo, and inspiring more women to run for office, gender parity benefits societies and enables progress.
That is why we, past and current elected and appointed representatives from all over the world, as well as candidates for elections, pledge to:
- Support and push forward legislation to ensure gender parity in local, regional, national and supranational elected positions and appointed government positions,
- Foster an inclusive environment where all people can and want to participate in the political life of our respective regions and countries, and
- Stand up for gender equality, always!
