Atlas' Statement on North Korea, January 2025

By Trent Trepanier

North Korea claims it has successfully tested an intermediate-range hypersonic missile, which it says will contain its rivals in the region. Such missiles are capable of flying at five times the speed of sound and can conduct evasive manoeuvers, making them much harder to shoot down than the more conventional missiles. This test follows North Korea's testing of an intercontinental ballistic missile in October last year and the entrance of North Korean troops into the fighting in the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War, with fears that Russia is providing North Korea with missile technology in exchange for troops. This provocation only serves to reinforce the dangerous path the world is on regarding the spreading of war and nuclear weapons. It represents a dire threat to human existence and must be condemned and resisted with a political course correction.

Atlas stands in support of the struggle of the Ukrainian people against the Russian invasion which began nearly three years ago. We also stand in solidarity with all those in North Korea who have been harmed and stifled by the repressive Kim regime. We stand for a world in which all citizens of the world have democratic rights, freedom of expression and movement, and freedom from war and the threat of nuclear weapons.

Atlas calls on North Korea to join the democratic nations of the world by progressing democratic reforms and for it to sign the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. We call on all UN member states to stand firm and united in their opposition to increasing militarisation and authoritarianism around the world, including through sanctions where necessary.

The Atlas Survival Bill offers the template needed for peace and prosperity in the 21st Century. This includes the creation of a Democracy Caucus within the United Nations so that democratic rules and norms can flourish. Our co-founder. Colombe Cahen-Salvador, is running for Secretary General to make that a reality (endorse her campaign here).

We need Atlas members in nations across the world and at all levels of government to lead the charge and curb the threat of military catastrophe. Together we can make a more peaceful world a reality. Join us.
