An assault on unarmed civilians in international waters
In the night of April 29โ30, 2026, Israeli naval forces intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters near Crete โ more than 1,000 km from Israel. The flotilla carried 345 activists from 39 countries, departing from Sicily on April 26 to break Israel's illegal blockade of Gaza.
Israeli military speedboats surrounded the fleet, pointed lasers and semi-automatic weapons at activists, ordered them to their knees, and systematically boarded and disabled multiple vessels. Communications were jammed โ including emergency SOS channels โ leaving people stranded at sea as a storm moved in. At least 11 boats lost contact; Israeli Army Radio confirmed at least 7 vessels seized.
Flotilla participants report that engines were destroyed and boats left adrift. This is not the first time: in October 2025, Israel intercepted and detained over 450 flotilla participants, including Greta Thunberg and a European Parliament Member. Those detained reported physical and psychological abuse in Israeli custody.
