We are on the brink of WW3, and the United States has just brought us very close to the most horrific conflict humanity will likely ever see.
By performing an illegal strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities, the United States once again disregarded international law, acted unilaterally, and pursued its self-interest over the global public good. Together with its genocidal partner-in-crime, Israel, the duo has destabilized the Middle East, committed war crimes, and is now tearing down the architecture that helped preserve a semblance of global peace for 80 years.
This is not to say that Iran is an innocent country or that it does not deserve tough sanctions for its policies. As a theocratic dictatorship oppressing women and minorities, as well as a destabilizing factor itself in the region, Iran has endured severe sanctions for more than a decade.
However, we are in a totally different situation now. It wasn’t Iran that pulled out of the 2015 nuclear deal to contain its nuclear research: it was Donald Trump himself. It wasn’t Iran that recently left the negotiating table to find a new deal: it was Israel that unilaterally bombed the country ahead of scheduled talks with the U.S.
Let’s not be blind: the criminal state of Israel is pursuing dominance in the Middle East and has managed to drag its protective godfather, the U.S., into the war. The consequences may be dire for us all. Civilians in Iran, just like those in Gaza and other Palestinian Occupied Territories, are suffering from indiscriminate bombing, damage to key infrastructure, and forced displacement from their homes.
Atlas obviously calls for restraint and the end of hostilities, as well as tough consequences in line with international law for Netanyahu, Trump, and their gangs. But we are not naive: there will be no consequences. And if not this time, then at the next illegitimate use of force - by the U.S., Israel, Russia, China, or else - a global war will explode. In today’s globalized and hyper-technological world, the framework of national interest to govern relationships between groups will naturally bring us to the end.
This is why we need a true global government, democratic and equitable, and able to address tensions through courts instead of military confrontation. As a progressive, global political party, we will work hard to make this possible in our lifetime, before it’s too late for us all.
We stand with the innocent people of Iran, Palestine, and all other oppressed territories.
