"Wave of Freedom for Hong Kong" Campaign - Launch

Hong Kong’s freedoms and civil rights have been under constant attack by China for years. The situation has been dramatically deteriorating lately with the introduction of draconian new laws. Yet, China winning its war on democracy and civil rights in Hong Kong would not only be terrible for Hongkongers; it also would have long term consequences on the world. If authoritarian states like China are left unchecked, democracy might soon become a dream of the past.

However, no country alone has the economic or diplomatic leverage to oppose this dictatorship and protect Hong Kong.

That is why, on the 23rd anniversary of the transfer of Hong Kong to China and the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, and on the 23rd anniversary of the annual march demanding universal suffrage and calling for civil liberties, we are launching the Wave of Freedom Campaign.

Starting today, we will work tirelessly for the creation of an international coalition of major democracies (the D-10) to coordinate responses and implement measures - such as economic sanctions - to safeguard Hong Kong’s freedoms and democracy. We will push for a Wave of Freedom, crossing all lands and seas.
