On the Emergency Arab Summit on Gaza

Atlas promotes the expansion of the United Nations’ (U.N.) powers to the extent necessary to both avoid the outbreak of war and to settle peacefully those currently ongoing. We believe every nation which claims to value human rights must come together to support these measures and to ensure Gaza is rebuilt for the Palestinian people. Following Israel’s ongoing genocidal campaign, the West’s complicity and the insane United States (U.S.) for Gaza, it is time for a common front and to say no more.

An emergency summit of Arab leaders convened in Cairo on Tuesday to discuss the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip. The summit was organized by Egypt in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan to have Gaza become controlled by the U.S. following the war. Trump’s plan, which would involve removing the Palestinian population from Gaza to make way for its transformation into a tourist destination, has received stiff pushback from not only Arab leaders, but his fellow Republicans in the U.S. Congress. Trump’s statements on Gaza come on the heels of imperialist statements regarding the possible American seizure of Greenland and the Panama Canal.

The plan Egypt is proposing will focus on early recovery once the war ends, rebuilding the utility infrastructure, housing reconstruction, and the establishment of a path to implement a two-state solution, according to Al Jazeera. Unfortunately, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, two of the wealthiest and most powerful of the Gulf states, did not attend. This could jeopardize the project as Riyadh and Abu Dhabi were seen as possible sources of funding.

We applaud Arab leaders coming together to provide a counter to Trump’s deranged proposal for ethnically cleansing Gaza. We condemn the latter in the strongest possible terms. We also urge the Saudis and Emeratis to join in supporting Egypt’s plan for reconstruction as soon as possible. One way of preventing further abuses to the Palestinians is to set in motion a realistic plan which would eliminate the possibility of Trump’s or anyone else’s insane plans.

Navi Pillay, head of the U.N.’s Commission of Inquiry on the Palestinian Territory, has decried the removal plan as illegal under international law, according to Politico. Atlas fully supports this statement, but the U.N. must be empowered to do more. First, Palestine must be admitted into the U.N. as a member state to ensure the Palestinian people are given the platform they deserve to fend off the brutalities leveled against them. Additionally, the jurisdictions of the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court must be made compulsory for all U.N. member states. We ask that you support the campaign of our co-founder, Colombe Cahen-Salvador, who is running to become the next U.N. Secretary-General. We also ask that you make your voices heard by attending our Freedom Marathon event on Saturday, March 15th, either virtually or in-person in Milan, Italy.

Defending the Palestinians and all others who have been the victims of aggression demands action and a political movement focused on humanity’s survival. We aim to be that movement, and ask that you join us.
